Do Your Trees Need a Trim? A Seasonal Pruning Guide

When and how to prune your trees for healthier growth and better safety

Late winter is one of the best times to prune most trees. As the dormant season comes to an end, trees are preparing for new growth, making this an ideal time for maintenance.

Pruning during this period helps improve structure, safety, and overall tree health.

Why Late Winter Is the Best Time to Prune

Pruning just before spring growth allows trees to heal quickly and grow more effectively. It also makes it easier to see the tree structure without leaves in the way.

What to Remove During Pruning

Focus on simple cleanup rather than heavy cutting.

Remove Dead or Damaged Branches

Dead branches can fall and cause damage. Removing them improves safety and tree health.

Trim Low Hanging Limbs

Branches that hang over sidewalks, driveways, or roofs should be trimmed to prevent hazards.

Remove Water Sprouts

Water sprouts are fast-growing shoots that appear on the trunk or main branches. Removing them helps maintain the tree’s shape.

Trees You Should Not Prune Yet

Spring-flowering trees and shrubs such as fruit trees and lilacs should not be pruned in late winter. These plants developed their buds in the previous fall.

Pruning them now will remove the blooms. Wait until after they flower before trimming.

Avoid Over-Pruning

Do not remove more than 25 percent of a tree’s branches in one year. Over-pruning can weaken the tree and affect its growth.

Avoid topping trees, as this can cause long-term damage and poor structure.

Where to Make the Cut

Always cut just outside the branch collar. This is the area where a branch connects to a larger limb or trunk. Proper cuts help the tree heal faster and reduce the risk of disease.

When to Call a Professional

If pruning requires climbing a ladder or reaching high branches, it is safer to hire a professional. Proper tools and experience reduce risk to both you and the tree.

Don’t Forget Winter Watering

While maintaining your trees, remember to water them when temperatures are above 40 degrees and there is no snow cover.
